  2. Objectives Define college health nursing standards and competencies. Explain the qualifications and application process to be recognized as a college health nurse. Describe how the application will be evaluated and successful college health nurse will be recognized.

  3. College Health Nursing What tools do you use when you hire a nurse? • Orientation check off sheets • Mentorship • And now College Health Competencies These were created in a collaborate effort with American Nurses credentialing during the recognition process.

  4. College Health Nurses provide quality, competent cost effective nursing care to the communities they serve. Standardized Nursing Competencies support evidence based nursing practices that strive for the delivery of high quality care through competent college health nurses.

Competency • “an expected level or performance that integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment” American Nurses Association (2008) • Continuing Competence is the ongoing application of knowledge and the decision-making, psychomotor, and interpersonal skills expected of the licensed nurse within a specific practice setting resulting in nursing care that contributes to the health and welfare of clients served. NC Board of Nursing (2011)

Education • acquires the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to practice in the area of college health. • partakes in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional skills. • seeks experiences to maintain clinical skills. • takes part in lifelong learning to keep abreast about the diverse health issues affecting college students. • seeks knowledge and skills appropriate to college health care systems and integrates new information and methodologies.

  8. Nursing Process • applies the nursing process in providing developmental-level assessments that focus on culturally sensitive and diverse client-centered care to young adults and all ages across the life span in the campus community. • collects client data. • analyzes the assessment data in determining a diagnosis. • identifies expected outcomes individualized to the client/ student or group of clients/students. • develops a plan of care that recommends interventions to attain expected outcomes. • implements interventions identified in the plan of care. • evaluates the client’s progress toward attainment of outcomes.

Collegiality • Collaborates with the individual, significant others, other members of the campus community and health care providers in providing patient care and college health activities. • Initiates with the individual, significant others, other members of the campus community and health care providers to provide client care and college health activities that are demonstrate learning outcomes. • Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others.

  10. Ethics • Evaluates his/her own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations. • Provides nursing services in a planned and organized manner to meet existing needs and identify future needs of the individual. • Determines actions and decision on behalf of individuals in an ethical manner

  11. Collaboration • Identifies expected outcomes unique to individuals. • Plays a part with other members of the community in assessing, identifying outcomes, planning, implementing and evaluating college health services and community health services.

Resource Utilization and Leadership • Evaluates systematically the quality and effectiveness of college health nursing practice and the college health program. • Contributes to nursing and college health through innovations in theory and practice through participation in research, and uses research findings in practice. • Utilizes interventions substantiated by research as appropriate to his/her own position, education, and practice environment and quality implementation activities at his/her own college activities.

  13. Professional Practice Evaluation • Evaluates his/her own nursing practice in relationship to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations.

Research, QI and Quality of Practice • Utilizes interventions substantiated by research as appropriate to his/her own position, education, and practice environment and quality implementation activities at his/her own college activities. • Evaluates systematically the quality and effectiveness of college health nursing practice and the college health program. • Contributes to nursing and college health through innovations in theory and practice through participation in research, and uses research findings in practice.

Communication • Offers communication through writing, publications, presentation and participation in professional and community groups to self-promote optimal physical and mental health and wellbeing. • Promotes patient activity in health wellness, health protection, and disease prevention services for individuals and groups
