HEP Detector Simulation • Generic Compensated Calorimeter Simulations. • Radiation Dose/Activation Simulations on HF prototype. • Next Generation HEP Detectors R&D and Simulations. • CMS detector upgrade projects for SLHC conditions. • Tools used: EGS4, GEANT4
Past experiences with EGS4 • We used EGS4 extensively to study and estimate the radiation dose levels for the HF detector. Compared simulations with the test results.
Fe-Matrix I and II We irradiated two Fe matrices with 500MeV electrons at CERN to study the dose and activation levels and compared the results with EGS4 simulations
Longitudinal dose development along the Fe absorber depth and EGS4 comparison
Study of HE w/ Quartz Plates A very high radiation dose (damage) expected on HE scintillators over a period of 10 years of LHC operation. Can we replace scintillators w/ (Radiation Hard) Quartz Plates? We use GEANT4 to study the performance and the properties of such a detector.
HE w/ Quartz Plates • A matrix of 3x3 towers with alternating 4.5 mm Cu and 0.5 mm Quartz plates constructed. • (30cm x 30cm x 100 cm) • Detector geometry optimization. • Read-out studies.
What we really need… Full CMS simulation for overall detector-physics performance on possible upgrades. Using new tools like OSCAR.
Also happening… • CMS Heavy Ion project, ZDC… • Performance and physics simulations for different designs; • HF style Quartz Fiber calorimeter Or • PPAC
