Introduction • Within Africa itself, slavery had existed for centuries. It was accepted without question as part of accumulating wealth. One became a slave by being captured in war, breaking the law or selling oneself into slavery to make money for your family.
For centuries, African societies had been involved in an overland slave trade that transported black slaves from West Africa across the Sahara to the Roman Empire and the Middle East. When the Portuguese made landfall on the West Coast of Africa in the 1440s, slaves became an item to be traded with the new European trading partners.
European expansion in the new world created a shortage of labor, or people to work. The Spanish needed miners to work the gold and silver mines in South and Central America. Then, the Spanish, Dutch, and English needed agricultural slaves to farm the sugar, rice and tobacco plantations.
Before Europeans came to Africa by sea, Africans only sold criminals and prisoners of war. Now, Africans kidnapped other Africans to sell into slavery. This began the largest forced migration in human history.
It is impossible to imagine what it would have been like to have been captured and sold into this new form of slavery. African slave traders attacked a village at night, set the huts on fire, killed any people who resisted, yoked the remainder together in neck braces of wood and leather and carried them off to the coast to be shipped to the New World.
