What Are Labels? The label is the cloth, paper or metal that is affixed to a product or container on which is printed or written symbols or information about the item. Information that is printed on an article or container directly is also considered as labelling. Labels offer a wealth of information such as the manufacturer, product’s origin, disposal, self-storage, and use. They can be used for advertising, providing warning instructions, environmental advice, information etc.
Why Are Label Rolls Preferred to the Cut-to-Size Labels? • Labelling in Bulk Quantities: For labelling products in bulk, labels roll is better as products with these rolls can be labelled faster. Labelling machines are available that require these rolls making labelling faster compared to done by hand. • Easy Storage: Another advantage of using the roll labels is that they can be stored easily. They are available rolled around tubes making their storage easy. There is no unwanted risk of folds or tears as these labels rest on the ribbon neatly until they need to be unfolded for use. As they are available in rolls, they occupy less storage space as well.
What are the Different Types of Labels? • Paper Labels: Paperboards and papers are used for making labels. • Latex Labels: Such labels have a lithographic stock along with added latex that permits the labels to be flexible and stick around curved objects better than paper. • Direct Thermal Labels: These types of labels would change colour when heated. The direct thermal labels can be customized easily on location. The disadvantage of these labels is that they can be ruined easily by another heat source. • Thermal Transfer Labels: These labels are used where the direct thermal labels cannot be used. The thermal transfer labels last longer and do not fade with heat or time. For printing these labels ‘thermal transfer ribbons’ are required. DYMO labels make use of ‘thermal transfer printing tapes’.
What are the Uses of Labels? • Products: These are the retail labels that are used on products for identification and offer a lot of information related to the product such as ingredients on food product or environmental information on the label on a refrigerator. DYMO labels are good for labelling DVDs, CDs, medical equipment, etc. • Packaging: These are the retail labels that carry the barcodes, pricing, usage guidance, unique identification number, recipes, advertising, addresses etc. They are also used for indicating pilferage or tampering. • Mailing: The shipping/freight labels are affixed on the containers for specifying the contents within them. The shipping/freight labels are used by the mail carriers and include special handling needs or routine barcodes. • Photographs: For producing high-resolution prints on graphic design or photographs the inkjet labels are a good option. The inkjet labels make use of inkjet printers for producing a high-quality print.
