  2. Metaphors Metaphor is a basic part of the way we both see the world and explain it to others. For example, we often talk about love as a journey: We’ll just have togo our separate ways. I don’t think this relationship isgoing anywhere. It’s been along, bumpy road. Or ideas/theories as buildings: Is that the foundation for your theory? His argument collapsed. We need to support the theory with solid arguments.

  3. How metaphors work A certain quality (basis or grounds of the resemblance), supposed to belong to an entity (the source), is re-applied or transferred to another entity (the target), which is usually a very different type from the source. Metaphors always express an evaluation of the target, which is why they are so useful in persuasive argument.
