KWL Complete the following sections of the KWL Chart • K – What you know? • W – What you want to know? We will complete the L section at the conclusion of the workshop
Goal • The overall goal is to give the school a report that will allow the school to move forward in improving mathematics instruction and the overall mathematics program.
What the MPIR IS: • An opportunity to determine the best direction for the mathematics program of a school • A tool to help to focus attention on some of the areas identified as needing improvement • A resource for moving forward in making the mathematics program more effective
What a MPIR is NOT • An evaluation tool • A form to identify specific teacher weaknesses
10 key program components • Curriculum • Instruction • Equity and diversity • School climate • Usefulness • Professional environment • Community
Organization and Leadership • Assessment and evaluation • Financial material resources
The Process • The MPIR team members will send a letter of introduction and expectations to the principals. • Team members will schedule site visit on a normal school day; teachers are not to give tests • Schools should be ready for a visit
First the team will meet with the principal – tour building, get team schedule. The principal will turn in: - principal questionnaire - copy of master schedule - copy of school improvement plan - state test data - list of media center math resources
The teacher will complete the teacher questionnaire upon arrival to be returned to team before leaving Classroom observations – each configuration, grade level, course offering, special ed, regular ed, inclusion classes, resource teachers - the team may walk around the room - the team will collect the Class Description sheet
Interviews will be conducted with principal, teachers, parents, students The team will visit computer labs, library/media centers
Other sources of information they will collect • Sample student work • Sample workbook pages/worksheets - textbook and teacher-made • Sample assessments • Sample lesson plans • Curriculum maps/pacing guides
WHAT DO THEY EXPECT TO FIND? • Materials readily accessible • Evidence of mathematics activity in the classroom and/or in displays • A defined curriculum, aligned to state and local objectives • A variety of documentation of student progress and participation in mathematics • Teachers familiar with and confident about their mathematics program
A defined curriculum, aligned to state and local objectives • A variety of documentation of student progress and participation in mathematics • Teachers familiar with and confident about their mathematics program • Evidence of mathematics in long-range/unit/daily plans • Positive attitudes from faculty, staff, parents, and students
The principal focusing on effective instructional practices and supporting the teachers in the implementation of aligned curriculum lessons and activities • Parent/community involvement in mathematics activities • A system of accountability/alignment of teaching to program standards • Mathematics targeted in the School Improvement Plan and the plan is reviewed/ monitored for progress regularly
Evidence of the use of instructional technology to enhance data collection, interpretation, and communication • Equity within the mathematics program, i.e., all students have equal access to high quality instruction as evidenced by high achievement regardless of gender, race, socioeconomic status, learning styles or multiple intelligences, and ability
Snapshot • Draw or write a few sentences that would describe a good example of a 21st Century Classroom. • Think: “Would you want your child to go to this classroom?”
Final Report • One copy sent/personally delivered to the principal only
Remember The focus of the MPIR is to bring about a positive change in the students’ mathematics learning and thinking.
