My STEM Placement June 2009
Who am I and Where I did I go? • Teacher of Science and Chemistry at St. Columb’s College Derry • STEM placement at All-Pipe Engineering Limited Derry
All-Pipe Engineering Background • Market leader in sketching, fabrication and installation of pipe-work for; • Petrochemical, • Power • Water • Food • Pharmaceutical and allied process industries.
All-Pipe Engineering Background • Clients include; • Esso Petroleum Co Ltd • DuPont • Invista • Mercury Eng Ltd • ESBI • Seagate Technology • Day & Zimmerman • Jacobs International • LSS/Statoil
What did I do? • Shadowed members of staff working in a variety of area’s; • Safety and Quality Assurance • Pipe Sketching • Pipe Fitting/Insulating • Welding
What did I get out of my placement • Insight in to what's currently going on industry • Inspiration for classroom exercises and projects • Opportunity to forge links between school and industry • Chance make my teaching more relevant to the “real world”
How has my experience influenced my teaching? • Invaluable knowledge of what is involved in industrial practice; • Answer questions in certain areas with more confidence • Give pupils an insight in elements of industry in which they maybe interested • Develop world relevant resources that stimulate pupils beyond the classroom
What ideas and resources have I brought into the class room?
Application of Magnetism Use of magnetic paint to highlight hairline fractures in pipe weld
Problem solving with Magnetism • Pupils given the scenario... • An engineering company wants to find out if a material is fit for use by determining if there are any cracks in the surface of the material... • Task.. You are supplied with a variety of materials some of which are faulty having cracks in them. Using a magnet and iron fillings, find out a way you could show up any cracks in the material...
Problem solving with Pressure • Pupils given the scenario... • All pipe engineering wants to know which piping would be best suited for a new high pressure gas pipe line in Co. Galway • Task... The pipe must be able to with stand a pressure of 50Nm2. Calculate the maximum pressure that each pipe below can withstand and work out which pipe is most suitable for the job. Area of Cylinder = 2 π r h Force Area x Pressure
Final Thoughts • Placement was extremely valuable in providing inspiration for teaching strategies beyond the classroom • Opportunity for teacher to experience working life beyond the classroom extremely enjoyable • Thank you to all at All-Pipe engineering for the all the help and support in making placement such a worthwhile experience
