  1. HELICOPTER The idea of a vehicle that could lift itself vertically from the ground and hover motionless in the air was probably born at the same time that man first dreamed of flying. Igor Ivanovitch Sikorsky (1955).

  2. HISTORY • The earliest references for vertical flight have come from China. Since around 400 BC, Chinese children have played with bamboo flying toys. The bamboo-copter is spun by rolling a stick attached to a rotor.

  3. HISTORY • 1480. When Leonardo da Vinci created a design for a machine that could be described as an "aerial screw", that any recorded advancement was made towards vertical flight. His notes suggested that he built small flying models, but there were no indications for any provision to stop the rotor from making the craft rotate.

  4. History • In 1754 Mikhail Lomonosov demonstrated a small tandem rotor to the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was powered by a spring and suggested as a method to lift meteorological instruments. • In 1906, two French brothers, Jacques and Louis Breguet, began experimenting with airfoils for helicopters and in 1907, those experiments resulted in the Gyroplane.

  5. History • Juan de la Cierva started building aircraft in Spain as early as 1912; in 1919 he started to consider the use of a rotor to generate lift at low airspeed, and eliminate the risk of stall.

  6. HELICOPTER • A helicopter can be defined as any flying machine using rotating wings to provide lift, propulsion, and control forces. The rotor produces a lift force equal to the weight of the helicopter can rise vertically from the ground and hover. • The helicopter can take off, fly forward or backward, climb and descend, and move in almost any direction at the whim of the pilot.

  7. HELICOPTER Modern helicopters have matured into sophisticated machines with extraordinary capability, which fulfill many civilian and military aviation roles.

  8. Types of helicopters • a). Single main rotor/tail rotor (conventional configuration). • b). Tandem rotors. • c). Coaxial rotors. • d). Side-by-side rotors. • e). Intermeshing rotors.

  9. If it wasn’t for Air ambulances helicopters, hundreds of thousands of people would not be alive today . • If it wasn’t for Coast guard helicopters, the nations would not be safe. • If it wasn’t for Firefighting helicopters, forest fires would be catastrophic. The reality is that helicopters are vital in our modern world • They don't need an airstrip. They can take off and land anywhere (weather and ground fire permitting).

  10. "If a man is in need of rescue, the airplane can come in and throw flowers on him, and that's just about all. But a direct lift aircraft could come in and save his life.“ Igor Ivanovitch Sikorsky
