What is the relationship between liquid pressure and depth of a liquid? • The relationship between liquid pressure and depth of a liquid is the greater the depth in a given body of water, the greater the pressure.
What is the relationship between liquid pressure and density? • The relationship between liquid pressure and density is Density is a measure of a liquid or solid when Pressure is a measure of a gas.
How does water pressure 1 meter below the surface of a small pond compare with water pressure 1 meter below the surface of a huge lake? • If the temperature of the water is the same in both bodies, and the barometric pressure is the same at both surfaces, then the water pressures at equal depths below the surface are equal.
Why does the buoyant force act upward for an object submerged in water? • Buoyant force acts upward for an object submerged in water by the pressure difference between the top and bottom of the object.
How does the buoyant force that acts on a fish compare with the weight of the fish? • They should be about equal. The buoyant force is a function of all the water displaced by the fish. If the weight of the fish is more than the weight of the water displaced the fish will sink; If the fish weighs less than the h20 it displaces it will bob to the surface.
Why does the buoyant force on submerged objects not act sideways? • It does. But every sideways force on one side of the object is balanced by an opposite sideways force on the other side of the object, so the net horizontal force is zero. You don't have that balance among the vertical forces, because the pressure varies with depth, so the forces on the top and bottom can't be equal, and plus there's also the force of gravity thrown in there.
Does the buoyant force on a submerged object depend on the weight of the object itself or on the weight of the fluid displaced by the object? • The upward buoyant force depends only on the weight of the displaced fluid. The NET force (object's weight - buoyant force) depends on the object's weight and will determine how fast it sinks.
How is the density of a submarine controlled? • The density of a Submarine never changes - what does change is its buoyant properties. The boat must maintain what is known as Neutral Buoyancy throughout different changes in water as it travels through the ocean. Temperature and Salinity changes are the 2 biggest factors in maintaining NB.
How is the density of a fish controlled? • While submerging or surfacing a submarine is done by either filling the ballast tanks with water or blowing out the water in the ballast tanks with air, the volume of the main ballast tanks are fixed. Variation in loading is compensated by means of the trim tanks and other smaller tanks. Control of the depth at which the submarine would be operated is done with a small tank called depth control tank. (In nuclear submarines this is just about 5 tons in capacity and is normally half full when the submarine dives). This is because as you go deeper in the ocean, there is a small but gradual increase in the specific gravity of the sea water. This means that a small increment in the buoyancy force is exert as the deep increases so that it would be necessary to add weight in the submarine to bring it to a greater depth. This additional weight is provided by letting additional water into the depth control tank. If it is intended to bring the submarine to a shallower depth, the content of the depth control tank is reduced.Fish control the depth at which they stay by either inflating or deflating there blabber ( a longitudinal sac in the fish abdominal chamber made of fatty material which could produce or absorb gas).
What is Pascal's principle? • Pascal's Principle states that the pressure is transmitted evenly through a liquid. That's why when you inflate a balloon with air, it expands evenly in all directions.
The density of a rock doesn't change when it is submerged in water, but your density does changed when submerged, WHY? • We can be compressed. Therefore, volume decreases while mass remains constant. Alternatively, we need oxygen in our lungs to survive, so as the water pressure increase with depth, the air pressure in our lungs must be increased to match. This means the mass of the gasses will be increased.
