The Engineering Society of Detroit Founded in 1895, The Engineering Society of Detroit unites engineers, scientists, architects, educators and technical professionals to enhance professional development, foster the growth of future leaders, and to improve the communities where members live.

Community Outreach Through its Junior Membership and Community Outreach programs, ESD works to foster excitement in math and science among young people to create the next generation of leaders and professionals.
Community Outreach In addition to our work with professionals, ESD is recognized as a leader in fostering the growth and development of future engineers and scientists through educational outreach programs that benefit over 10,000 students each year.
Engineering SMArT Detroit™ offers high school children real-world applications of science, math, architecture and technology as it relates to their schools and the environmental challenges within their community. The program engages students to shape their own communities through their new understanding of energy and sustainability. Mentors & Volunteers Needed!
This 6-month long team-based program groups sixth, seventh and eighth grade students with a teacher and engineer mentor to collaborate on designing a city of the future, complete with infrastructure, transportation, communication systems, power plants, industrial, commercial and residential settings. • Over 1,000 students and more than 400 teachers, mentors, judges and professionals participate each year.
Since 1993, over 16,000 middle school students have participated in ESD’s Future City Competition. • Mentors and volunteers are always needed!
Junior Membership ESD’s Junior Membership is for students ages 8–17 who are interested in exploring science, technology, engineering or mathematics as possible future career paths.
SciEngiMathePloration ESD’s award-winning cable TV show for kids focuses on math, science, and engineering; showed on cable TV nationally and internationally. Reaches 6 million households each month via distribution to local and national public television stations, schools, libraries, professional associations, and other interested groups affiliated with children and youth. Show is co-hosted by ESD member Gary Mach and a middle school student.
Speakers Bureau The ESD Speakers Bureau helps teachers connect students with professional engineers. ESD speakers do not charge any fees for speaking to students, clubs, or other civic organizations.
Affiliate Council Stay connected to more than 92 engineering, scientific, educational and technical societies and associations through the ESD Affiliate Council.
The ESD Institute's mission is to provide a solution-based contribution of realistic choices that maintain and create innovation, investment, jobs and hope for society through integrity.
