February 10, 2011 EQ: How did problems with France intensify the split between the Federalists and Democratic Republicans? Objectives: -Discuss the rising tensions between the United States and France. -Evaluate the new American President John Adams navigates the US away from war. -Investigate the growing split in viewpoints between the Federalists and Democratic Republicans. Alien and Sedition Acts -The war fever deepened the split between Federalists and Republicans. -Federalists began fearing the French Revolution spreading in the United States from French immigrants living in the United States. -Furthermore they feared these French immigrants would side with the Republicans. -Federalists were irritated of the constant criticism from the Republicans and were worried that the Republicans would disrupt Federalist plans. -The Federalists wanted to eliminate their political rivals and keep the United States from foreign threat.
Alien Act -What is an alien? -The Alien Act increased the time it took too become a citizen from 5 years to 14 years. -It also gave power to the president to deport any immigrant the President felt was dangerous. Sedition Act What is sedition? -The Sedition Act targeted Republicans and their hateful speech. -It prohibited anyone to write or say anything insulting or anything false about the President, Congress or the government in general.
