  2. Natural Disaster • A major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth • Can cause loss of life or property damage, and typically leaves some economic damage in its wake.

  3. Disease • An illness or disorder that affects a particular species

  4. Epidemic • A widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time

  5. Refugee • A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster

  6. Tornadoes Definitions: A violently rotating column of air that is touching the ground and the clouds above it • Examples • Happen all over the world • Very common in the Midwest and Plains States • In Early March 2012, 11 people were killed in Indiana because of tornadoes

  7. Hurricanes Definition: A rotating storm with violent winds that usually starts in the Caribbean Examples: • Hurricane Sandy • Hurricane Irene • Hurricane Katrina

  11. Earthquakes Definition: A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust • Examples: • The New Madrid Fault Line • San Andreas Fault Line • Sumatra 2004

  14. Tsunamis Definition: A large sea wave caused by an earthquake or other disturbance Examples: • Sumatra 2004 • Japan 2011

  15. Floods Definition: An overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, esp. over what is normally dry land • Examples: • 2011 in Indiana and Ohio • Occurs everywhere on a regular basis • Often happens with hurricanes

  16. Volcanic Eruptions Definition: the sudden occurrence of a violent discharge of steam and volcanic material Examples: • Pompeii, 79 AD • Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption 2012 (Russia) • Eyjafjallajökull 2011 (Iceland)

  17. Landslides/Avalanches Definition: The sliding down of a mass of earth or rock from a mountain or cliff; the sliding down of a mass of snow and ice from a mountain or cliff • Examples: • Tibet (last week) • Can happen anywhere with hills, mountains, or cliffs

  18. Wildfires Definition: A large, destructive fire that spreads quickly through forested areas Examples: • Colorado 2012 • Common on forested areas

  19. Epidemics Definition: A widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time • Examples: • H1N1 (Swine Flu) • SARS • HIV/AIDS • Malaria • Tuberculosis • The Black Death (Bubonic Plague)- 1300s
