  1. Chapter 2 - Responses

  2. Discuss and answer • What is media archaeology defined as for Emerson? “it does not seek to reveal the present as an inevitable consequence of the past but instead looks to describe it as one possibility ggenerated out of a heterogeneous past.” (xiii) • Why is this important? “Media determine our situation.” Media impact our daily lives and hide ideologies that influence our decisions, beliefs and actions.

  3. Discuss and Answer • What is Emerson’s main argument (her thesis for the book) • Why does Emerson say it is important? “In reality, the glossy surface of the interface further alienates the user from having access to the underworkings of the device” (xi) “When transparency not only transforms into that which is valued above all else but also becomes an overriding, unquestioned necessity, it turns all computing devices into appliances for the consumption of content instead of multifunctional, generative devices for reading as well as writing or producing content” (xii)

  4. Chapter 2 • Where does Emerson state her thesis for chapter 2? What is it? • Outlines in paragraph 2 how she will be examining & what. In 3 she answers “why” questions: (WHAT) shift to GUI creates shift in how people think as well as literary production,(HOW) promoting itself as better, particularly with the Apple Corp. (WHY) This gives users appearance of individuality/autonomy, even though they aren’t actually autonomous knowledgable beings.

  5. Do you agree with Emerson’s argument about the growing ideology of the user-friendly interface? What evidence does she give? Do you think this is a justifiable claim?

  6. Chapter 2 ctd “The point at which technology saturates a culture is the point at which writers and artists, whose craft is utterly informed by a sensitivity to their tools, begin to break apart that same technology to once again draw attention to the way in which it offers certain limits and possibilities to thought and expression.” Do you agree? Where do you see examples of this in life that prove/disprove this?

  7. Watch & Respond • iPad ad and pages 80-83 • What is Emerson’s argument? Do you agree? Why or Why not? What real world evidence do you see that counters/explains this?
