  1. Do Now 1. What is the smallest unit of life? 2. Circle the things that are alive from the following list: Dog Oven Algae Water Stars Trees Grass Bacteria Jellyfish Rocks Ocean 3. What are the common properties of cells? 4. What is the main function of membranes?

  2. Monday/Tuesday, August 19/20, 2013 Your Learning Goal: Students will be able to relate the function of a cell membrane to a house and explain its importance in cell function Table of Contents:1.2 Cell Membranes Standard:1a: Cells function similarly in all living organisms Agenda: • Do-Now: KWL chart • Notes: Cell Membrane • Group Station: Build a Membrane • Independent Station: Cell membrane Worksheet • Exit Slip Homework: Finish Cell Membrane Worksheet

  3. TPS- Why do houses need walls?

  4. What is a cell membrane? 1. The cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer with proteins inside 2. The cell membrane surrounds and protects the Cell 3. The cell membrane is selectively permeable

  5. Oil and Water demonstration • Oil is Hydrophobic

  6. What is the phospholipid bilayer?

  7. I. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic • What do you think Hydro- is? • What hydrates you during sports practice? • What do you think -phobic means • Arachnophobic: fear of spiders • Acrophobia- Fear of heights. • Claustrophobic: Fear of small paces • What do you think –philic means? • Bibliophilic: love for books • Francophilic: Love of France

  8. I. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic • Hydrophobic: Hates water • Hydrophilic: Loves Water

  9. II. Phospholipids • Membranes are made up of molecules called phospholipids. • Phospholipidsare fatty acids that make up membranes • Phospholipids have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail • Fat cells, called adipocytes, in your body are cells just made of phospholipids! Hydrophilic Head  Mixes w/ water Hydrophobic tale “HATES” water 

  10. Phospholipid CFU What does hydrophobic mean? What does hydrophilic mean? What’s another name for phospholipids?

  11. Water outside the cell III. Phospholipid arrangement • Membranes are formed by a phospholipid bilayer • Phospholipid Bilayer: A two sided layer of phospholipids with the hydrophilic tails in the middle and the hydrophobic heads on the outside No Water Water inside the cell

  12. TPS: Why do the heads face outside towards the water?

  13. Cell/Plasma membrane Heads are Hydrophobic-does not like water Tails are Hydrophilic-likes water

  14. What’s the purpose of the cell membrane?

  15. Cell Membrane • The cell membrane has three main jobs: • Keep good stuff in and bad stuff out • Separates cells from the outside • Protect cells from the environment

  16. What is selective permeability?

  17. I. Selective permeability: • the process of allowing some molecules to pass into the cell while keeping others out

  18. Why do houses have doors, windows and screens?

  19. II. Proteins are tunnels through the membrane • Proteins let molecules that can’t fit through the lipids into and out of the cell • Proteins in the membrane select which large molecules come in and out • Proteins are like the the doors and windows of the house

  20. The plasma membrane (cell membrane) is made of two layers of phospholipids. The membrane has many proteins embedded in it. • The plasma membrane regulates what enters and leaves the cell. Many molecules cross the cell membrane by diffusion and osmosis

  21. Question 1 What term means that membranes are made up of two back-to-back layers? a) selective permeability b) non-polar tails c) bilayer d) phophate

  22. Question 2 Which part of the diagram below is hydrophilic? a) A b) B c) Both A and B d) Neither A nor B A B

  23. Question 3 Which part of the diagram below would not mix well with water? a) A b) B c) Both A and B d) Neither A nor B A B

  24. Question 4 Which part below will end up in the middle of a bilayer? a) A b) B c) Both A and B d) Neither A nor B A B

  25. A B

  26. Question 4 In what types of organisms are cell membranes found? a) prokaryotes b) eukaryotes c) bacteria d) all of the above
