What is a Rock? • Solid mixture of naturally occurring substances • May contain both organic and inorganic material • Vary in size • Vary in composition
Types of Rocks • Igneous • Sedimentary • Metamorphic Gabbro - Igneous Coquina - Sedimentary Blueschist - Metamorphic
What are Igneous Rocks? • Igneous rocks are rocks that are formed from the crystallization of magma.
Formation of Igneous Rocks • Extrusive – fine-grained rocks that cool quickly on Earth’s surface • Example: pumice • Intrusive – coarse-grained rocks that cool slowly beneath Earth’s surface • Example: granite
Formation of Sedimentary Rock • Weathering – processes that break rock into smaller pieces
Formation of Sedimentary Rock • Erosion – the removal and movement of surface materials from one location to another
Formation of Sedimentary Rock • Deposition – occurs when sediments are laid down on the ground or sink to the bottoms of bodies of water.
Formation of Sedimentary Rock • Burial – sediments are layered on top of each other
Formation of Sedimentary Rock • Lithification – processes that transform sediments into sedimentary rocks • Compaction • Cementation
Metamorphic Rock • High temperature and pressure combine to alter a rock without melting it • High temperatures • Earth’s internal heat • High pressure • Weight of overlying rock • Compression during mountain building
The Rock Cycle • The continuous changing and remaking of rocks • Any rock can be changed into any type. • There is more than one path in the rock cycle.
