  1. Christ’s Compelling LoveII Corinthians 5:12-17

  2. Introduction-1 • In the first part of chapter 5, Paul speaks of the resurrection of the dead, his desire to be with Christ and the final judgment • In V14 he says that the “love of Christ” compelled him • The word compel (sunecho) means to confine, to hold fast or to urge • The idea is that Paul’s behavior was regulated and restricted • Not only by the fear of the judgment which influenced Paul- V11 • It should also cause us to live righteously

  3. Introduction-2 • Nor was it just the reward which Paul spoke of previously- V1 • And not by his calling to preach the gospel to the Gentiles- Acts 9:15 • Which also motivated Paul • But the thing that he mentions here is the “love of Christ” • I want to consider the love of Christ and how it should compel us in the lesson this morning

  4. Christ • The Messiah, the anointed One • The Son of man who was a decendant of David • The Son God who possesses all the attributes of Deity- Col. 2:9 • And who created all things- Col. 1:16 • Whose love for us is the same as the Father’s love- Jn. 3:16 • What a great honor it is to be the object of the love of one so exalted and so powerful- I Jn. 3:1

  5. The Nature of Christ’s Love-1 • Christ’s love is universal • He loves His enemies as well as His friends • He teaches us to love our enemies also- Mt. 5:44 • He demonstrated His love in dying on the cross for us- Rom. 5:8 • He died for all people- Heb. 2:9 • Christ’s love is unconditional • He loves us regardless of our external circumstance

  6. The Nature of Christ’s Love-2 • He loves both saints and alien sinners • He wants His disciples to remain faithful- Rev. 2:10 • And He wants those in sin to repent and turn to Him in obedience • He, like the Father, wants every soul to be saved and to be with Him in eternity- II Pet. 3:9 3. Christ love is sacrificial

  7. The Nature of Christ’s Love-3 • His love caused him to leave the glory and perfection of Heaven • And to live on this earth as a servant- Phil. 2:7 • And to willingly give up His life on the cross for us- Phil. 2:8 4. Christ’s love is constant • He will love us regardless of our failures and our stumbling • We may leave Him but He will never leave us- Heb. 13:5 • Such a love is indeed a compelling love

  8. The Compelling Influence of Christ’s Love-1 • Christ’s love compelled Paul and it should compel us also • Christ’s love should compel us to worship Him • He is worthy of all praise, honor and glory- Rev. 5:9 • We should look forward to and enjoy the opportunity to worship our Lord and Savior • Yet there are some christians today like those the 1st century who forsake the assembling of christians- Heb. 10:25 • Christ’s love should compel us to obey his word- Jn. 14:15

  9. The Compelling Influence of Christ’s Love-2 • To live as the new creation that He has made us- II Cor. 5:17 • To avoid the sins by which we were previously enslaved • And to do good to all people as Jesus did- Gal. 6:10 • And to do all things by His authority- Col. 3:17 3. Christ’s love compels us to love each other • We should love every brother and sister in Christ • Because Christ loves them and died for them also • Because we are members of the same spiritual family- Eph. 2:19

  10. The Compelling Influence of Christ’s Love-3 • We should love other christiansas Christ loved us- Jn. 13:34 4. Christ’s love compels us to love His church • His spiritual body- Eph. 1:22-23 • Which He loved and for which He gave Himself- Eph. 5:25 • That love is demonstrated in doing our part in building it up- Eph. 4:16 • And in working to keep it free from the pollution of sin and error

  11. The Compelling Influence of Christ’s Love-4 5. Christ love should compel to seek those who are lost in sin • Paul said that “One died for all”- II Cor. 5:14 • Then all must be dead- Rom. 3:23 • Jesus said that he came to seek and to save that which was lost- Lk. 19:10 • Christ still wants every person to be saved- Mk. 16:15 • His concern and desire should be ours also

  12. In Conclusion • The love of Christ compelled Paul to live for Christ and to preach His gospel • It should compel us also • To worship Him, to obey all His word, to love His church and every christian who comprises it and to seek those who are lost in sin • He has promised those who do these things an inheritance in Heaven with Him • Has the love of Christ compelled you to obey His word?
