Benchmarks • SC.2.N.1.1 - Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free exploration and systematic observations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations. (Cognitive Complexity/Depth of Knowledge Rating: High) • SC.2.N.1.2 - Compare the observations made by different groups using the same tools. (Cognitive Complexity/Depth of Knowledge Rating: Moderate) • SC.2.N.1.4 - Explain how particular scientific investigations should yield similar conclusions when repeated. (Cognitive Complexity/Depth of Knowledge Rating: High) • SC.2.N.1.5 - Distinguish between empirical observation (what you see, hear, feel, smell, or taste) and ideas or inferences (what you think). (Cognitive Complexity/Depth of Knowledge Rating: Moderate) • SC.2.P.13.1 - Investigate the effect of applying various pushes and pulls on different objects. (Cognitive Complexity/Depth of Knowledge Rating: High) • SC.2.P.13.4 - Demonstrate that the greater the force (push or pull) applied to an object, the greater the change in motion of the object. (Cognitive Complexity/Depth of Knowledge Rating: Moderate)
Lesson Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: • Describe motion • Define force (in terms of push and pull) • Explain the relationship between force and motion Key Vocabulary: • force, motion, rest, push, pull
Lesson Essential Questions: • What is motion? • What happens when we push or pull an object? • What happens when I push or pull an object strongly? • What happens when I push or pull an object gently? • What is a force?
Playground Activity We are going to outside to find out how many different ways we can move on the playground.
What is motion? • Things are moving. • Things in motion change position.
Different Waysan Object can Move • fast • slow • around and around • straight • zigzag • up and down • slide
Give it a push or a pull What can you do to make an object move?
What are a push or a pull that makes something moved called? Forces

Puffer Paths • Key Question: How many puff does it take to move your sheep from the pasture to the sheep pen? (See game board.) • Materials per student to make acotton ball “sheep” : drinking straw, cotton ball, chenille stick (pipe cleaner) • Materials per group: game board and tally sheet • Game Objective: Count and record the number of puffs it takes to blow a cotton ball “sheep” along a path on the game board. Compare your group’s data to the data for the whole class.
Connecting Learning • What happens when we push or pull an object? Answer: It moves. • What happens when I push or pull an object strongly? • What happens when I push or pull an object gently? • What is motion? • Answer: Motion is the change in the position of an object. • What is a force? Answer: A force is a push or a pull that makes something move. • What are you wondering now about forces?
