  1. Transformations, Tessellations & Smartphones AMATYC Friday, November 1,2013

  2. Common Core State Standards for Mathematics • Ask students to: • Experiment with transformations in the plane • Understand congruence in terms of rigid motions • Understand similarity in terms of similarity transformations.

  3. Four transformations • Rigid Motions that demonstrate congruency: • 1.Translation • 2. Reflection • 3. Rotation • 4. Glide reflection

  4. Translations - SLIDE Slide vector

  5. Reflection - Flip Flip over line of symmetry

  6. Rotation - turn Rotate about the turn center

  7. Glide Reflection Translation and rotation

  8. Dilation Demonstrates Similarity

  9. Symmetry Line of Reflection

  10. Tessellations Filling the plane with repetitions of congruent figures

  11. Soumaya Museumin Mexico City

  12. Smartphone activity Student Examples

  13. STEP 1: Take 3 pictures • Take 3 pictures with an electronic device of each category of geometric motions (not a picture of every transformation etc.), an example from one of each of the following categories:

  14. Transformation • Symmetry • Tesserllation

  15. Step 2: Place each picture in a Word Document. • IDENTIFY type of transformation • INSERT “line of reflection” for symmetries • Clarify if reflection or rotation symmetry or both • IDENTIFY vertex of tessellation

  16. Submit to your instructor as an attached word document, see below. • Print a black and white copy, attach it to THIS handout and place in your portfolio.

  17. Submit electronically to Connie McLean at:mcleanc@bhc.edu

  18. Subject line: Math 200 and you and your partner’s full names. • SAVE AS last name-last name • Both partners should not submit, just copy your partner so they have evidence that it was sent before deadline.
