  1. Water: Hydrologic Cycle and Human Use Chapter 7

  2. Water and its importance • Aral Sea • Fresh water • A continually renewable resource • Hydrologic Cycle Figure 7-3 pg 171 • Describe the difference between the water molecules when evaporating and condensation is occuring • Purification occurs through evaporation and condensation- how is this possible?

  3. Water Cycle • Global cycle in which water flows through terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric environments • Helps purify and distribute water around the planet • The cycle: • Evaporation • Condensation • Precipitation

  4. More Water • Precipitation and how it occurs • Warm air rises, why? • Adiabatic cooling • Changes in amount of precipiatation • Convection currents • Hadley cell Figure 7-6 • Rain shadow Figure 7-7 • Change in amount=change in biomes

  5. Hadley Cell Animation • http://www.nodvin.net/snhu/SCI219/demos/Chapter_7/Chapter_07/Present/animations/50_1_2_1.html

  6. Water in the Ground • Water has two paths as it hits the ground • Runoff the surface • Flows into lakes and streams (surface water) • Leak into the ground (infiltration) • Held in soil (capillary water) • Percolation (gravitational water) • This process is a cycle- Figure 7-8 pg 176

  7. Humans and Water • Our impacts • Change the surface • Change the climate • Atmospheric pollution • Withdrawal for use

  8. Water and Usage • Nonconsumptive Uses vs. Consumptive Uses • Groundwater vs. Surface Water • Developing countries and disease • U.S. and technology • Dams and ecosystems • Groundwater supplies

  9. Water and Policies • Use water effectively so have enough for human needs • Need to do so in sustainable manner • Capture more of the runoff water • Gain better access to groundwater • Desalt seawater • Use less water to conserve • Water wars • Policies
