What Fortune Can Effect in Human Affairs and How to Withstand Her ~XXV By Raman, Janelle, Salina and Nick
Questions: The powerpoint will cover all the questions for our section. Numbers 41-44. Number 45 is your own opinion.
Ratio of Free Will Machiavelli believed that fortune only controls half of one's actions, leaving free will to control the other half. Statue of Machiavelli in Florence
Fortune as a River Fortune can be compared to a river that floods because it can destroy everything in it's way, but if you stay prepared (dams) you can control the actions you take (flood).
Stay Aware If the Prince relies entirely on fortune he won't be able to correctly respond if the fortune is lost. So if a man is successful by acting one way and the circumstances change, he will fail if he doesn't change his methods.
Adventure and Caution It is better to be adventurous than be cautious because fortune is a woman and the man who want to control her, must treat her roughly. "Fortune favors the bold."
Agree or Disagree? • So do you agree or disagree with Machiavelli's reasoning? Explain. • Overall this chapter was about the relationship of actions and fortune in determining the success of a Prince.
