Encouraging EV Uptake Mark Daly Sheffield City Council
Focus on • Failed on Plugged In Places • Not a bad thing! • Bids to Dept for Transport and EU • Public charge point infrastructure • EVs in public sector fleets • Myths about EVs
Plugged In Places • Yorkshire failed in this bid • Some success • Valuable lessons learnt • Landscape changed
6m 12m Increasing EVs in public sector fleets • Championed by Rotherham council leader • Looking to get more EVs operating in Yorks and Humb LAs • Focus on vans • Rotherham assessed fleet and majority of own fleet would meet EV criteria
Exploring/Exploding EV Myths Ford Comuta 1967 – “available in next 10 years” They are all milk floats
Cost • Not a myth, they are indeed expensive to buy…but… • At the moment EVs for commercial purposes most appealing • Renault twizy under £7k • E- scooter £1k • £13,000 Renault Zoe
Speed Tesla Roadster 0 to 60 MPH acceleration of less than 4 seconds, top speed 125 mph Renault Kangoo ZE a more sedate top speed of 81mph
Range • How many of us do 80 -100 miles per day? If less than this, the technology can more than go the distance • Charge points and charging pattern requirements alter over time Car tailpipe CO2 emissions as a function of trip purpose
Batteries • Biggest expense – Nissan Leaf 25% of the cost • Evidence that price is dropping with further predicted price drop • Are we just replacing extracting one scare resource (oil) with another (lithium)?
Carbon • Removing carbon exhausts by transferring to power station stack?
The future • Hybrid technology • Battery Technology and Price • Change in profile of car/vehicle types –away from high power gas guzzlers • Pump prices will go up • To increase EV uptake, there needs to be sustained policy support and incentives • Should not try and replicate current conventional car use patterns – be innovative
