Chapter 13 Conquest and Exile Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel
Hezekiah • Judah –only thing left of the Kingdom of David • King Hezekiah • Judah –rebirth • Isaiah was his guide • Serious reformer • Tore down pagan temples
King Hezekiah • 2nd best king • Renovates the Temple • Reinstitutes daily sacrifices to God • Celebrates Passover • These things are good, but cosmetic • People didn’t trust and truly change • Assyria threatens to take over Jerusalem • Hez repents making human alliances in past • God defends them-185,000 Assyrian men found dead in the morning
Book of Isaiah • Three or more Prophets • Ch. 1-39 –Isaiah • Rest of book –compilation of Isaiah’s prophecies • Main theme- repentance /judgment • Faithful remnant will return to establish a new kingdom • A-Remnant-Shall-Return
Isaiah • Isaiah • Sent to call Judah to repentance • Sent to warn of destruction if Judah did not repent • Looked forward to Israel being spiritual capital of the world
Isaiah • Isaiah talks to King Ahaz • Rely on God, not allies • Ahaz “officially” believes in God • Doesn’t • He can’t tell Isaiah to leave, but he has no faith in him • God offers a sign-something that can immediately be proven true
Isaiah • Ahaz says no sign necessary-I believe • Lie • If he got it, he would live accordingly • God gives a sign anyway • Is 7:14 • “The virgin will be with child and bear a son, he will be called Immanuel”
Isaiah • Isaiah was probably referring to Ahaz’s fiancé • Virgin • Young, unmarried woman • Immanuel • God with us • Holy king Hezekiah • Best king after David • Listened to the prophets
Isaiah • Matthew uses this verse • Understood now to refer to Hezekiah and Jesus • Isaiah didn’t know this • Many verses in Isaiah are similar • Main message: • ALL are called to holiness
King Manasseh • Son of Hezekiah • Wicked King • Treaties with Assyrians/ adopted customs • Opposed religious reforms • Opposed worship of God alone • Yahweh central –other statues in temple • Similar to having statue of satan in Catholic Church
King Manasseh • Sacrifices his son to Moloch • Murdered all those who stand in his way • Sawed Isaiah in half • No more prophets are sent to him • Captured by Assyrians • Converts (restores temples to True God) • Longest reigning King –Judah and Israel
King Josiah • Son of Amon (son of Manasseh)who was assassinated • Great reformer • Priests found the Book of the Law –Deuteronomy • Heard curses on Israel for disobeying the Law • Prophetess Huldah confirmed bad news
King Josiah • Gathered all the people • Read the Book of Law to them • Swore to keep all Commandments of God • Tore down false altars • Even after being punished • Did what was right –even if no immediate benefit received
Jeremiah • Josiah’s sons –worthless • All carried away by powerful kings • One left as vassal to Nebuchadnezzar • Despite bad –no repentance • Prophets beaten • Brought bad news • Jeremiah –beaten –thrown down well
Jeremiah • King Zedekiah consulted Jeremiah • Why? • Stubborn –knew he had the Truth • Jeremiah • Powerful despite unpopularity • Foretold destruction –no words for it • Used Genesis –world would be undone
The Impossible Promise • Creation will not be totally undone • People will be united with new covenant • Sins will be forgiven • Hosea • Marriage metaphor for relationship with God • Wife cheated –forgiven • Ezekiel • No matter what the sins –people will be redeemed
Exodus Reversed • Destruction of the temple • War • People taken away • Ark of the Covenant taken • Will not return until all of Israel reunited • In Babylon • Understood what they had lost
The Book of Daniel • Tells stories about faithful Jews (Babylonian Exile) • Daniel • Picked to serve king • Refused dietary custom of King • Stayed faithful to Old Law
The Book of Daniel • Nebuchadnezzar • Had a dream • Wanted wise to interpret –tell him what it was • Answer not satisfactory –killed the wise men (including Daniel) • Daniel prayed to God • God revealed the dream to Daniel
The Book of Daniel • Nebuchadnezzar’s dream • Enormous statue • Head was gold • Breast/arms were silver • Belly/thighs were bronze • Legs were iron/ feet were part iron and part clay • Rock was cut from mountain –struck statue and broke it –the stone became a mountain
The Book of Daniel • Daniel’s interpretation • Head – Nebuchadnezzar (great king) • After (silver) comes inferior kingdom • After that (bronze) inferior kingdom to both • Fourth –arise that crushes first three –but kingdom would be only party strong • God Himself will set up final kingdom –will never be destroyed –fill the whole earth
The Book of Daniel • God the source of all wisdom • Nebuchadnezzar did not grasp distinction between True and false gods • Daniel’s companions • Refused to bow to false gods • Thrown into furnace • Faith saved them
The Book of Daniel • Daniel and the lion’s den • Did not worship false god • Thrown into lion’s den • Faith saved him • King Darius required all to worship the God of Daniel –the True God • Stories kept the Jews faithful
