Is there A sufficient material hydrophobic enough to Replace traditional Ski bases?
Our Proposed Solution: Rare-Earth Ceramics • MIT researched 13 of the 14 rare earth oxide ceramics from the lanthanide series (14th is radioactive) • Tough material, intrinsically hydrophobic • Found that contact angle ranged from 103° to 115°
Theory • Point where solid, liquid, and gas states meet and forms a contact angle • Young’s equation balances the interfacial surface energies between the three surfaces • Low surface energy between liquid/gas interface gives large contact angle
Lab Procedure • Ski Prep • Divide ski into 4 sections • Hot drip wax • Clean excess wax from ski • Scrape away with sharp plastic “scraper” • Brush particulate with Brass & Nylon brush
Ski is Fully Prepared Cold (30°F) Warm Vs. Cold Place Ice Bags on Ski (1 hour) Warm (60°F) Partially Freeze Water Level Ski Level Camera Droplets of Water onto Surface of Ski (<5mm in size) Analyze Data Count Pixels Capture Series of Pictures
