  2. What’s the Problem? • Nevada 45th in number of doctors • 50th in number of psychiatrists • Long wait times for some specialties • Some diseases not treated in Las Vegas • Largest metro area without a public school of medicine • Missing $1.1 billion/yreconomic impact

  3. Why a UNLV School of Medicine? • Will educate 60students a year at start, then 120 to 180 per year • Will recruit more than120 faculty to educate students and residents • Will partner with UMC, VA, and other hospitals to build programs • Will build research programs in key areas

Vision for UNLV School of Medicine UNLV School of Medicine will be an innovative center for teaching future Nevada doctors to work in teams, use cutting edge technology, and to develop novel yet classically-based preventions and treatments. It will drive development of AHC partnership among LV hospitals and physicians that will build high-level clinical, educational and research programs.

  6. Key Areas for Development Build clinical, educational, & research programs in: • Cardiology • Mental Health & Addiction • Neuroscience • Cancer • Orthopedics

  7. Guiding Principles • Select students who will stay in Nevada • Diverse student body • Doctors for urban practice • Problem and team based education • Classic history and physical exam coupled with genomics and advanced technology

  9. Education Program • First and second years: problem-and team based groups with clinical and community activities • Third year: required clerkships, IM, Surgery, ObGyn, Peds, FM • Fourth year: electives and additional required courses

  12. Why both GME & UNLV School of Medicine? • NV needs to increase number of residents in primary care, specialties, and subspecialties • Need additional faculty to teach more residents/students in more specialties • Need programs to keep graduates in NV

  13. By 10 Years, UNLV will: • Be fully accredited • Graduate 180 students • Recruit 120 faculty • Increase physicians staying & practicing in NV

  14. By 10 Years, UNLV will: • Have generated 5,300 new jobs • Have $800M economic impact/yr • Generate revenue over $250M/yr • Generate $4 for every $1 of state investment/yr

  15. Summary UNLV School of Medicine will be a catalyst and driver for better health care for southern Nevada also bringing great economic growth in the health care sector
