Desperate Faith: Jairus' Daughter and the Woman With the Issue of Blood

This text explores the desperate faith of Jairus, a synagogue ruler, who begs Jesus to heal his dying daughter, and the woman with the issue of blood who believes touching Jesus' garment will bring her healing. It reminds us that desperation can lead us to put aside prejudice and turn to Jesus for help.

  2. Matthew 9:18-26 Desperately Driven to Jesus (Mat 9:18 KJV) While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. INSIGHT: In Mark 5 and Luke 8 we are told that this man’s name is Jairus which means ‘Jehovah enlightens.’ His daughter, whom we will find out, is his only daughter, is twelve years old.

  3. She has some grievous ailment and she is at the point of death. KEY OBSERVATION: Matthew - formerly Levi - tells us that Jairus "was a ruler of the synagogue" This was most likely the synagogue in Capernaum. This was the synagogue that was built by the Roman Centurion, (Matthew 8) who earlier sent his servants to Jesus with the request, "Will You heal my servant who is dying?" We were told that Jesus "marveled" at the faith of that centurion and said that He had “not seen such faith in all of Israel" and that at "that very hour" the servant was healed.

  4. The Jews even commended this centurion to Jesus saying, that "he was a good man for he had built their synagogue" ............. Jairus was the RULER of that synagogue. KEY INSIGHT: As the "ruler" of that synagogue, Jairus had already seen Jesus do many marvelous works. In fact, it's very possible that Jairus was one of those who were really ANGRY with Jesus because of some of the things that Jesus did in the synagogue of which he was ruler.

  5. For it was in the synagogue in Capernaum on the Sabbath day that Jesus came into the synagogue....... And there was a man there with a withered hand....... And IMMEDIATELY they watched Jesus to see what He would do. Jairus was probably in the crowd watching Jesus, thinking with the others: "He better not heal on the Sabbath Day, or He will be violating the Mishna." (Luke 6:8-11 KJV) But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. {9} Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil?

  6. to save life, or to destroy it? {10} And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. {11} And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. KEY INSIGHT: Jairus had seen that, and it could be that Luke 6:11 describes his reaction towards Jesus. But it's amazing that when the life of your little daughter is at stake, WHEN YOU'RE DESPERATE, you're willing to put aside a lot of your prejudices.

  7. And when you're DESPERATE enough, you'll look to anyone who will hold out a promise of help........ And Jairus was DESPERATE Get the picture of this man now: Luke’s record declares that " he fell at the feet of Jesus and BEGGED Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter about 12 years of age, and she was dying." There is a huge multitude of people. Jairus is one of the most prominent men in town.  He has a very powerful position - He's the ruler of the synagogue.

  8. And yet he's down on his knees “begging” Jesus. No doubt there were tears in his eyes. Because we're also told in the story that she was an “only daughter,” and that she was about 12 years old. She must have been the light of his life.  Her daddy's pride and joy. She had brought him 12 years of joy and love. But now the sparkle in her is eyes gone Now she's dying.

  9. In his desperation Jairus has ZERO concern for public opinion In his desperation Jairus has ZERO concern for what his religious peers might think of him. AMAZING! He had seen the power of Jesus before….. And didn’t believe…. In fact tried to come against Him. But now - in his desperation - he REMEMBERS what Jesus did in his synagogue…. So he runs to Jesus and in total humility begs Jesus to come to his house AMAZINGLY WE READ…..

  10. (Mat 9:19-21 KJV) And Jesus arose, and followed him, If I were Jesus I wouldn’t have…. Would have had some choice words for Jairus! and so did his disciples. {20} And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: {21} For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. OBSERVATION: An amazing contrast in these desperate cases 12 years ago Jairus was blessed with a daughter…. 12 years of joy.

  11. DURING THOSE SAME 12 years this woman’s life would have been filled with misery. KEY INSIGHT: Religious tradition in the day of Jesus said that if you were a woman and you suffered from a blood flow it was because you were sexually immoral, and that God was judging you because of your sexual sin. KEY INSIGHT: We know from Leviticus 15 beginning in verse 25 that she was cut off from the nation. She couldn’t be around her husband…. No sexual intimacy…. And after 12 years of no sex he no doubt had divorced her by this time.

  12. She couldn’t be around her kids. She couldn’t take her children on her lap because the flow of blood made her unclean. She had to be outside the camp. No doubt she went to the garbage heaps begging. She couldn’t work. Nobody could employ her. The law had cut her off. And in her mind she must have thought that God is mad at her….. God is punishing her.

  13. And in her mind she must have thought Nobody cares about me….Nobody loves me. There is no hope for her. KEY INSIGHT: On top of all of that we’re told in the other gospels that she had spent all her money on doctors with no results. We’re told that her entire living was gone. She had spent everything and was no better…. In fact she was worse. Things haven’t changed in 2,000 years!

  14. People are still spending everything they have in their attempt to find Real life Real joy Real peace Mark tells us WHY this desperate woman made her way to Jesus through this crushing multitude. Mark 5:27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. She made her way to Jesus BECAUSE someone loved her enough to tell her about Jesus!

  15. 20And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. The word “touched” Literally means “grasped” or “clutched.” The word “hem” Is “tassel.”

  16. KEY INSIGHT:The men were told in the Mosaic Law that they were to put these “tassels” on the 4 corners of their robes. In rapping the robe around you, one of them would be tossed over the shoulder onto the back. This is the “tassel” that she came from behind and “grasped.” In her DESPERARTION this woman came up behind Jesus and put a death grip on the “tassel” of Jesus And we’re told that “immediately her flow of blood stopped.”

  17. (Mat 9:22 KJV) But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. KEY INSIGHT: Now the other gospels tell us that Jesus asked - WHO TOUCHED ME? All the guys said, What do you mean, ‘who touched me?’ The people are crushing us and You want to know who just touched you.” He in essence said - “No, people push, faith touches. Somebody touched me and virtue has gone out of me.”

  18. KEY INSIGHT: Jesus knew who it was He said it to give her the opportunity to discover more about Jesus than His healing power KEY INSIGHT:Mark and Luke tell us that she came falling down trembling…. And Jesus said to her, “Daughter.” That’s an important word. That’s the only time Jesus in the gospels calls any woman by this word. It’s a term of endearment…. The word Jairus would have used of his 12 year old daughter.

  19. By using that term Jesus owns her as his daughter. And I’m sure Jairus is thinking to himself, “Oh great SHE’S your daughter now. What about MY daughter? She’s at home dying. Can’t you just forget this daughter and get to my daughter? God hears everybody but me. God heals everybody but me. God takes care of everybody but me. God loves everybody but me.

  20. KEY OBSERVATION: It was her faith that made her well - NOT the touching of Jesus. There was no magic in that “tassel” on Jesus' garment. KEY OBSERVATION: It was her faith that moved her to make her way through the crowd that was “Thronging” Jesus. She made her way to Jesus because she believed that Jesus had the power to heal her.

  21. KEY OBSERVATION: Her faith appears to have flaws. She was afraid. Yet she believed that Jesus was bigger than her problem!  Her faith was IN Jesus! ILLUSTRATION: A woman known for her beautiful relationship with the Lord had someone come to her and say: “I'm so glad to see you, you're the woman of such strong faith." She replied: “No sir, I'm the woman of weak faith in the strong Saviour!”

  22. KEY INSIGHT: Her HAND had touched the robe of Jesus, but her FAITH had touched the HEART of Jesus! By faith she had touched God And in turn God had touched her! KEY APPLICATION: Today you might feel that you don't have enough faith to live for Christ. But the slightest amount of REAL FAITH in Jesus saves because He is able to save! Come to Jesus and I guarantee that you'll trust Him more with every passing day.

  23. KEY INSIGHT: The smallest amount of REAL FAITH will MOVE you to God. (Heb. 11:6) "Those who COME to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who DILIGENTLY SEEK Him.” KEY INSIGHT: REAL FAITH always moves you to lay hold of Jesus. You can't say - “I believe that Jesus can change my life” and then never go and “Clutch” Jesus. JOHN 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

  24. KEY INSIGHT: Receive and Believe go hand in hand Received = to lay hold of Her DESPERATION drove her to Jesus Her FAITH moved her to lay hold of Him! KEY INSIGHT: Touching Jesus was her way of acting on what she believed. It showed that she really did believe. So Jesus said to her:

  25. v.22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. KEY INSIGHT: Both Mark and Luke tell us that Jesus said, “Go in peace.” That was her future. She had been made whole. PEACE is the result of being made whole Made whole = sozo = saved
