Strategic Planning • A process which provides a vehicle for improving current and future organizational effectiveness • It systematically organizes the future using past experience as a filter for future decisions
Why is it important? • Informed decision making • Team-building • Continuous organizational improvement
Identification of values Creation of an operational mission statement Internal & external environmental analysis Identification of the organization’s goals and objectives Identification of action steps designed to accomplish the plan Reality testing of the plan Feedback process 7 steps of Strategic Planning
Organization values Values represent the core priorities in the organization’s culture, including what drives members’ priorities and how they truly act in the organization Establish 4-6 core values from which the organization would like to operate
Mission statement • Describes the overall purpose of the organization • Guiding ?’s • Is the mission written for employees as well as customers? • Does the mission support the values and guiding principles of the organization? • Have employees been given the opportunity to participate in the development of the mission?
Internal Environmental Analysis • Identification of the org’s strengths and weaknesses • Guiding questions: • What is the financial condition of the org? • What are the aptitudes / abilities of all ‘ees? • What is the current condition of facilities? • What is the current state of technology? • What is the quality of human resources?
Internal Analysis ?’s continued… • What are the current visions of various departments? • How is the organization structured? • Describe the company culture. • Identification of policies and procedures that improve or impede organizational performance and effectiveness • Describe managerial practices within the organization • Describe organizational leadership
External Analysis • Examination of the external environment allows for the identification of the organization’s opportunities and threats • What external financial, material, and human resources are available? • What is the organization’s image in the market? • What is the org. competitive rank in industry? • What are possible dangers that could threaten the viability and future success of our organization? • What are advantageous circumstances that provide us with the chance to explore new directions?
