They speak the Kurdish language • Most Kurds practice Sunni Islam and a small percentage practice Shi’a; some are Christians • Kurdish women have more rights than in some other ethnic groups (because of less strict religious beliefs) • A lot of Kurds suffered discrimination under the rule of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and many died The Kurds continued…
The Persians mostly live in Iran • Iran used to be called Persia (during the Persian Empire) • Reza Shah Pahlavi changed the name of the country in 1935 • Most practice Shia Islam practices Shar’iah law • Small groups practice Zoroastrianism and some Christians • Under Iranian laws since 1979 women must wear a chador (a covering that only reveals your face) • They speak Farsi also known as Persian The Persians
