Why should Zontians be interested in UN? • UN Charter and Universal Declaration Of Human Rights 1948: Article 1, Article 2... comply with Objectives of Zonta International • Zonta International Bylaws Article II: all four objects – to improve the status of women, to promote justice , to foster ethical standards - can be sustainably fulfilled with cooperation with UN. • ZI one of the most important international NGOs, who supports the target group women and girls worldwide and one of the very few NGOs that provides financial support to the UN! Why should Zontians be interested in UN? • ... in addition • ZI highly accepted and respected by UN since foundation in 1946 • ZI focus on women and girls worldwide who are in the footlight of UN goals and projects • ZI knows what women need, feel, miss – the UN is dependant on advice and support of such expert NGOs! • ZI width and depth of professional competence qualifies to effective support and help  ADVOCACY represents ZI key competence  ADVOCACY is the name of the game! ZONTA INTERNATIONAL – consultative activities • Actual examples • Sustainable Development Goals SDG 2030 • Adoption at General Assembly in New York September 25, 2015 • SDGs cover all countries – industrialized as well as developing countries • Goal 5 (of 17) : Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls • ... also goals 1 End poverty, 2 End hunger, 3 Health for all, 4 inclusive and equitable quality education all, and 16 Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all - realise that these five goals affect the great majority of women worldwide, therefore they fall under ZI mission as well! • ZI presented together with like-wise minded NGOs critical remarks to the final draft of the SDGs http://www.zonta.org/ClubsLeadership/Tools/SustainableDevelopmentGoals.aspx D14 UN Committee 2014-2016

VICIOUS CIRCLE • .... how the first goals 1-5 cause each other.... • HEALT – POVERTY -– HUNGER - VIOLENCE • 40 Mio. births per annum are not registered according to estimates of WHO; consequently serious lack of knowledge concerning the well being of mothers and children. • This data gap renders improvement of women‘s health most difficult. • The role of women in the areas of nursing and health care is greatly underestimated. In addition, women‘s work in particular in these areas is gravely underpaid. • Consequently: The homes have not enough income leading to financial dependence and exploitation! Zonta International e-Newsletter • September 2015 | Issue No. 12 • Zonta International joins Girls Not Brides Partnership -> http://www.girlsnotbrides.org • As an organization empowering women through service and advocacy, Zonta International is proud to join the Girls Not Brides partnership to end child marriage and help girls realize their full potential. • ZI Statement on women's rights and non-state terrorist groups • The 2014-2016 Zonta International Board released a statement, calling for the United Nations and its Member States to commit to stopping violence against women in conflicts and to find effective short-term working methods to stop non-state terrorist groups.
