Team Structure • Rigo Macias(CE) • Nathan Oertel(CE) • Matthew Sneeden(CE) • Aaron Staves(CE) • Faculty Advisor: Dr. Welch
Problem: 3 different audio devices Home Stereo Car Stereo Portable Expensive Inconvenience of Transporting Media Solution: One device Portable Home Docking Station Car Docking Station Save Money Eliminate need to transfer media Introduction
Primary Tasks: • The unit will be functional for portable use • Support Functions: Play, Stop, Next/Previous Track, Volume Control • LCD will display functional data • An adequate power system will be designed • PC interface/software will be complete for data transfer • Storage of digital music on a mass storage device will be possible
Secondary Tasks: • MP3 Track information will be displayed by the LCD • All three applications of the unit will be functional • The docking stations will be fully functional • Amplifiers for speaker output • Power converters will be designed • Software for advanced MP3 file management
Additional Tasks: • FCC/CE testing/certification • Remote control operation of the unit • Record capability • Playlist capability • FM radio capability
Current Status • All primary hardware research completed • Research conducted in the following areas: • Mass Storage Devices • MP3 Decoders/Microcontrollers • LCD Displays • Battery Devices • Hardware decisions made based on research results
Decision Criteria • Criteria Used • Portability • Economics • Manufacturability • Design Decision • Cost • Physical Size • Capacity
Current Market • In media players today there are two main types of mass storage devices that are mainly used • Flash Memory • Hard Disks
Flash Memory • Solid State Circuitry • Extremely Portable • Low Power Consumption • Expensive • Small Capacity
Hard Disks • Mini Drives • Ideal For Portable Use • Standard IDE Interface • Low Power Consumption • Shock Resistant • Moderately Expensive
Recommendation • Mini Hard Drives • Low Power • Portable • Large capacity • Low cost compared to Flash Memory • Specific Model Recommendation • Toshiba MK Series • Research further and obtain a drive late cycle 2
Decision Criteria • Criteria Used • Portability • Controls • Economics • Manufacturability • Design Decision • Interface • Size
Current Market • In embedded systems, there are two implementations that can be used to decode MP3 information • MP3 Decoder Chip • Microcontroller with Embedded MP3 Decoder
MP3 Decoder Chip • Inexpensive • More Design Options • Requires Numerous Additional Components • Large Circuit Required to Interface Components
Microcontroller with Embedded MP3 Decoder • Interfaces for Storage Devices Built In • Requires Few Additional Components • Small Circuit • Inexpensive • Capabilities Limited by Microcontroller
Recommendation • Microcontroller with Embedded MP3 Decoder: • Low number of additional components required • Small Circuit • Select specific model • Atmel AT89C51SND1: • Built in IDE interface • Large amount of technical support available • Obtain MP3 decoder late cycle 2
Decision Criteria • Criteria Used • Economics • Manufacturability • Design Decision • Size of Display Digits Needed • Cost
Current Market • In audio devices today, two display types are commonly used • LCD Character Display • LCD Graphical Display
LCD Character Display • Inexpensive • Compact • Large Display Digits • No Color
LCD Graphical Display • Capable of Attractive Graphics • Color • Display Digit Size Depends on Programming • Expensive
Recommendation • LCD Character Display • Large Display Digits • No additional programming required • Inexpensive • Specific Model Recommendation • CrystalFontz CFAH1602A-YYB-Jp • 12 x 2 Character Display • Obtain LCD Character Display late Cycle 2
Decision Criteria • Criteria Used • Economics • Manufacturability • Environmental • Portability • Design Decision • Cost • Size • Waste Produced
Current Market • In the current market, there are three types of batteries commonly used in portable devices • Alkaline • Lithium-Ion • Polymer
Non-Rechargeable Alkaline • Inexpensive • Large • Not Rechargeable • Short Life • Thrown Away After Use
Lithium-Ion • Lightweight • Small • Rechargeable • Moderately Expensive
Polymer • Lightweight • Small • Rechargeable • Expensive
Recommendation • Lithium-Ion Battery: • Less-expensive than Polymer • Small Size • Rechargeable • Specific Model Recommendation • Ultralife UBP103450/PCM Lithium-Ion
Prototype Approximation – Cycle 2 • Atmel AT89C51SND1 reference model: $212.00 (Single-chip cost of $12.00) • Toshiba 40 GByte mini-IDE hard drive: $168.00 • 12 by 2 character Liquid Crystal Display: $11.00 • Lithium Ion Battery: $10.00-$26.00 • Approximate Total: $400
Cycle 2 Plans • Finalize selection of components • Determine use of microcontroller I/O • Determine interfacing between components • Study microcontroller programming environment
Beyond Cycle 2 • Cycle 3: Design of MP3 player and docking stations • Cycle 4: Construction and testing of MP3 player • Cycle 5: Final circuits designed and MP3 playback functionality completed • Cycle 6: Finalize construction with required specifications included • Cycle 7: Cosmetic enhancements and implementation of extra specifications
Conclusion • Cycle 1 has concluded successfully. • All project milestones for this cycle have been achieved. • Research shows that the project is feasible and on target for completion. • The project is on track to continue into Cycle 2.
