Airedale Terriers • Dogs should measure approximately 23 inches in height at the shoulder; bitches, slightly less. • Color: Black/Tan. A red mixture is often found in the black. A small white blaze on the chest is permissible. • Basic Requirements: Monthly bathing and every-two-month stripping of the coat required. Moderate shedding if properly groomed. Airedales require an average-sized yard, with room to run and use up their boundless energy. • Temperament: Intelligent, lively and confident. Gentle yet firm training required. Loves to play. Good with children.
Akita • AKC Height: Ideally, Males 26 to 28 inches at the withers; bitches 24 to 26 inches. Color: Any color including white, brindle, or pinto. Colors are brilliant and clear and markings are well balanced, with or without a mask or blaze. • Basic Requirements: Akita need moderate exercise, and regular exercise is important. A strong, securely fenced yard is a must.
Boston Terrier • Basic Requirements: Boston Terriers need a moderate amount of room to exercise. They make good apartment dogs. Watch for signs of heat distress. Boston Terriers can overheat easily. Because of this, and the fact that they do not readily tolerate cold weather, they should be kept indoors. Weekly brushing and occasional bathing is needed.
Dalmation • Basic Requirements: Early obedience training is important. Dalmatians want to be a part of the family. A strong 6' fence surrounding a large yard with room to run and play is best for a Dalmatian. Weekly brushing will help to keep moderate shedding under control. • Health: Average lifespan is 12 years. Watch for deafness, Allergies, Uric Acid Syndrome
Greyhound • Basic Requirements: Greyhounds need a well-fenced, large yard with room to run and play. They enjoy playing games of ball with their family. Weekly brushing and occasional bathing will help to keep the coat in good condition. • Temperament: Greyhounds are typically gentle and laid-back indoors. They are wonderful family dogs and get along well with children. They are not aggressive watchdogs.
Mastiffs • Basic Requirements: Due to their large size, Mastiffs require early socialization around new people and situations, and consistent obedience training. A securely-fenced yard with room to run and play is necessary. Weekly brushing will help to control moderate shedding. • Temperament Properly raised Mastiffs are not generally aggressive dogs; however, they are loyal to and protective of their family, and can become aggressive in certain situations. Dogs that are raised around children are usually very good with them.
Pugs • Basic Requirements: Pugs do well in smaller homes and apartments, although they still need a moderate amount of exercise. They cannot be left outside for long in hot weather as they can easily overheat. Weekly brushing and occasional bathing will help to control minor to moderate shedding. • Temperament: Pugs are generally happy, lively people-oriented dogs. They make good family pets are usually good with children.
