How to review a paper? • Be polite and helpful for improving the paper • One or two sentences summarizing the paper • The strengths and weaknesses of the paper • Your comments give the reasons for your recommendation • If you feel the author(s) should be aware of related work, try to provide specific references • Try to give the kind of review you would like to receive for your own work • Keep the original paper you reviewed for a few months • Do not distribute unpublished papers Source:http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~mosse/review-process.html
How to choose a good research problem? • This is the hardest, and most important, part of research! • The Goldilocks problem: • Not too hard, not too soft, not too hot, not too cold, not too big, not too small • Think, read, act, evaluate • And talk to everyone – not only your advisor • Passion or duty?
How to write a good report? • Highlighted keywords • Meaningful headings and sub-headings • Bulleted lists • One idea per paragraph • users will skip over any additional ideas if they are not caught by the first few words in the paragraph • The inverted pyramid style, starting with the conclusion • half the word count (or less) than conventional writing Source:http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9710a.html
