This presentation provides an overview of a simple method for calculating the minimum capacitance value of a self-excited induction generator used in wind energy conversion applications. The proposed method uses manufacturer data and nameplate details to determine the required capacitance. Experimental validation and simulation studies are conducted to support the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is effective in obtaining the necessary capacitance for self-excitation and grid connected operations. The leading VAR required by the grid connected generator varies with wind velocities.

Abstract • A review of methods of minimum capacitance value calculation of a 3-Ø self–excited Induction generator used to extract the power from wind have been attempted. • Either induction generator used as stand-alone mode or grid connected mode of operations it require capacitors in wind power generation. • Now a days grid connected induction generator require capacitor even though grid supplies the reactive volt-ampere (VAR), to avoid the voltage collapse due to heavy drain of VAR from the grid. • A simple method suggested, calculating the capacitance value to self-excite the generator using the manufacturer data. • A sequential systematic procedure of capacitance calculation of a 3.7kW, 415V, 7.8A, 1420-rpm induction motor has been completed using its nameplate details. • An attempt made to validate the proposed method. A proto type model of induction generator has been rig up in the laboratory using a separately excited D.C. motor coupled with an induction motor. • Simulation studies of performance of SEIG have been completed using power system toolbox in Mat lab / Simulink software. CONCLUSION • Simulation of SEIG completed using power system tools box in Mat lab / Simulink software. • Rotor reference frame of induction motor in d-q axis considered for motor model. Initial current in the stator winding of SEIG taken as 0.28 ampere and slip is 3% arbitrarily. • Time required to build up the rated voltage is 1second. The simulated results show 253V with charging current of the capacitor is 2.129A with a frequency of 50 Hz. • The proposed method is a simple and easy to calculate the capacitor require self- exciting the induction motor working as a generator and the grid connected induction generator. • The capacitor connected across the grid connected capacitor to reduce the burden of the grid to supplies the leading VAR to the generators. • The leading VAR required by the grid connected generator varies with vary the wind velocities.
