Chapter 8 1. What country does David cross into after leaving Switzerland? David crosses into West Germany. 2. Just as David once again believes he is safe, he realises that ‘they’ have found him. Who do you think ‘they’ are? “They” would be the communists or perhaps police. After David escaped from the farm, the farmer would have reported him to the police and the authorities would have learned of his possible whereabouts. The fact that he had the dog with him would have made him even easier to find.
Explain how David is able to avoid being captured by ‘them’. The dog sacrifices his life and kind of acts as a decoy by running in one direction, causing “them” to follow him, while David runs in the other direction. • How does David manage to get to Denmark? David gets to Denmark by hitching a lift with a lorry driver.
Consider how the story ends, then look at your answer to Question 6 from Chapter 6. Are there any similarities to your answer and how the novel ended? David is able to track down Edith by looking up her address in the telephone directory. When he arrives and tells her his name, she straightaway realises that he is her son. *Did you predict the ending?
