I Hear an Army By James Joyce
I hear an army Charging upon the land
And the thunder About their knees Of horses foam plunging
In black armour Arrogant Behind them stand Disdaining the reins With fluttering whips charioteers
They cry When I hear Unto the night Their battle name Afar their whirling laughter I moan in sleep
They cleave The gloom of dreams Clanging Clanging upon the heart The blinding flame As upon an anvil
They come out of the sea They come Shaking in triumph And run shouting by the shore Their long green hair
My heart Have you no wisdom Thus to despair
My love My love Why My love Have you left me alone
