  2. Inhalants • Vapors of chemicals that are sniffed or inhaled to get a “high.” • Many are household products. • Can cause permanent damage to the liver, kidneys, bone marrow, and brain.

  3. Prescription Pills • #1 drug of choice in the U.S. • Refer to pages 51-53 in the workbook.

  4. Cocaine • White powder made from the leaves of the cocoa plant. • Causes the person to feel “edgy” or depressed. • Causes an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and body temperature. Also causes paranoia, brain seizures and reduces the body’s ability to fight infection. • Sniffed, snorted, smoked or injected. • Cocaine’s effects are short lived, and once the drug leaves the brain, the user experiences a “coke crash” that includes depression, irritability, and fatigue.

  5. Steroids • Synthetic (human-made) forms of the male hormone testosterone. • Sometimes prescribed for diseases that weaken muscles. • Causes damage to the liver, kidneys and increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, extreme acne, and some types of cancers.

  6. Hallucinogens • PCP (angel dust) – changes mood and affects perception, causes them to feel terror and become violent. No sense of time or space. Blocks pain receptors. • LSD (acid) – causes side effects such a higher body temperature, sweating, paranoia, and intense terror. Also causes flashbacks. • Ecstasy (MDMA)- confusion, depression, paranoia. Causes brain damage, increases heart rate and blood pressure, leads to kidney failure, breathing problems and death. Senses become confused. • Methamphetamines (crank) • Mushrooms (shrooms)

  8. Club Drugs • Rohypnol (ruffies) – causes blackout, drowsiness, dizziness, and memory loss. No taste, color or smell. • GHB – another blackout drug. • Ketamine – used during surgical procedures. • Prescription Pills
