INVESTERS People who risk their own money on a project in hopes of a future. The people only make their money back when the venture is complete by charging a fee. Such item were canals and railroads. FACT # 2
Canals • Manmade waterways in 1856 began to connected Louisiana’s rivers and bayous. • The first canals were dug by private investors (people who risked their own money on a project) who charged users a fee. FACT # 3
Internal Improvements • The political and economic focus on (roads, bridges, canals, and other transportation needs) increased with the coming of the railroad. Passengers on the earliest railroads in Louisiana paid a 25-cent fare for an exciting but not always pleasant ride. FACT # 4
The belief by Americans that they were destined to spread out across the continent. • Sometimes they believed the whole continent awaited their arrival. • A journalist wrote “…the fulfillment of our Providence…” FACT # 5
Tutors • Some children were taught at home, and the wealthy planters often hired tutors (private teachers). • Many children were still taught in private schools and many more children who lived outside the cities and towns received little education. • An early one-room schoolhouse in Claiborne Parish was typical. School “took in” at 8:00 a.m. and “turned out” at 5:00 p.m. FACT # 6
