MOTOR SPORT DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP MOTOR SPORT INJURY: A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH Dr Michael Henderson, Fellow, FIA Institute (with the help of the Medical Advisory Panel) 22 March 2011
AIMS OF THIS PRESENTATION • Summarise the aims, development and present status of the FIA Institute Medical Programme, which was established to develop and advance the skills of medical personnel in motor sport • Explain the necessity for a systematic and multidisciplinary approach to injury control and research in motor sport
Institute Medical Programme • Provide education through documentary material and seminars • Develop criteria for quality assessment • Undertake multidisciplinary research to enhance medical practice in motor sport • Secure funding through the FIA Foundation Motor Sport Development Fund • Establish the FIA Institute Medical Advisory Panel
Motor sports injury: towards a multi-disciplinary approach • Motor sport safety is a multidisciplinary issue • Global road safety advances supported by the FIA Foundation are now driven by a systems approach • In the wider world of science, biomedical engineering already requires the collaboration of engineers and clinical scientists • The research and educational activities supervised by the new Medical Advisory Panel can work with and enhance the existing engineering-oriented research of the FIA Institute
Defining a system shows how components interact: the medical-engineering link The contribution by biomedical sciences is noted in red [After Haddon W, 1972]
A multidisciplinary framework for motor sport safety Medicine Engineering THE LINKS First intervention Extrication Survey Treatment Injury mechanisms Injury tolerance Personal protection Fitness Recovery Rehabilitation Anti-doping Energy management Vehicle protective systems Roadside and trackside features and design Epidemiology Mass data – accident databases In-depth serious crash investigation Data collation and analysis
Summary The Institute is committed to: • A reinvigorated Medical Programme • A multidisciplinary approach to motor sport safety research, combining medical, engineering and epidemiological elements
