Naturalism Each picture requires a special composition and every artist treats each picture originally. – Peter Henry Emerson • Photos that are sharply focused, simple, and show man and nature through ordinary everyday subjects with sense of art. • Alfred Stieglitz is best known for his pictorial works, but he was also influenced by the Naturalists.

Pictorialism • Created after naturalism. • Photographer adds their own sensibility into the image - with pictorial meaning. • Alfred Stieglitz was the main spokesperson for the artists group “I do not object to retouching, dodging. or accentuation as long as they do not interfere with the natural qualities of photographic technique.” – Alfred Stieglitz
