What’s Going On? • The Utah International Charter School is seeking a diverse group of students. ( Arrived immigrants, refugees and native English speakers) • The class sizes will be small and there will be a strong focus on reading, writing, and spoken English. • Another focus of the school is “cultural competency” • All subjects will be taught through diverse methods, teachers will meet students at their educational level, and students will actively interact with their peers. • To ensure personal interactions the charter is set at 480 students.
What are my initial thoughts? Would I allow my child to attend such a school?
Why It’s Important? • Allows students to be socially conscious and learn about other cultures • One of a few; could aid in setting a precedent for education • Focuses on assisting newly arrived immigrants and allowing them to make a smooth transition to the American educational system • Allows them to adjust to the new curriculum (Common Core) with a small student to teacher ratio at a reasonable pace. Unlike joining a common school where the pace is not set around the students.
How does this setting positively and negatively compare to a common school?
The Effects • Students: It will be more challenging for a student to begin at this school at an older age. • Teachers: Teachers focus on getting students ready for college acceptance. Accepting that students will not be all the same and embrace the diverse background of cultures. Also, receive teacher training sponsored by the grant from the Daniel’s Foundation. • Community: This school helps address traditional public schools’ inability to serve students who need 1-on-1 attention.
