  4. History • Ancient times- Nam Viet (along Red River) • Influenced by China- writing, Buddhism • 207 BC: Chinese armies invade • On and off rule by China • 1859-85: French conquest • 1941: Japan takes over • Resistance to Japan leads to resistance to France in 1945

  5. First Indochina War • 1946-54 • Communists (led by Ho Chi Minh) defeat the French to get independence • Divided: communist N, non-com S • Supposed to be a vote, S prevents it, war brews • US secretly sends “advisors” to help military of S

  6. Vietnam War • 1964: US ships “attacked” by N • US troops fight only in S • 1968: 500K US troops there • We thought we were winning, Tet Offensive proves wrong • US begins withdrawing, gone by 1973 • 1975: South conquered • 58K US troops killed • 4M Vietnamese, 2M Cambodians/Laotians
