Whenhot and cold meet! Convection in Water Investigation FOSS “Weather and Water” investigation five part 2
The Challenge Make layers with plain water of different temperatures.
Hypothesis Example: If temperature affects the behavior of water molecules, then the warm water will expand and rise to the top layer. Draw your layer prediction in your lab book. Red is hot water Blue is cold water Clear is room temperature water
Materials and Procedures • Two Styrofoam cups • One cup of hot water • One cup of cold water • One plastic cup • One vial • Two pipettes • Paper towels
Whenhot and cold meet! Fill vial about ¾ full with room temperature water. Use the bulb pipettes and colored water to create three layers in the vial. The plastic cup is for failed attempts After successfully layering the three colors, leave it undisturbed for five minutes and observe what happens. Record your observations and draw the layers Finishers--- what would happen to your layers if you gave them a warm bath in the warm water cup? Start with a new batch that has the layers and slowly set the bottom of the vial in the warm water.
Discussion of Results What variable made it possible to layer the solutions? If two solutions have different densities, which layers on top? Why did the red layer go to the top and the cold layer go to the bottom? What happened after 5 minutes left undisturbed?
