Human Molecular Genetics Biology
DNA Fingerprinting • No one has the exact same DNA except identical twins • Molecular biologists use DNA fingerprinting to identify individuals • DNA fingerprinting analyzes sections of DNA that have little or no known function but vary widely from one individual to another
Using their knowledge of DNA and various techniques, scientists can extract, cut, identify and copy DNA. DNA Extraction – simple chemical procedure separate DNA. DNA Cutting – restriction enzymes cut particular DNA sequences. Separating DNA – gel electrophoresis. Copy – using polymerase chain reaction “PCR”
PCR rap video • What is a polymer? • What is an enzyme? • Polymerase Chain Reaction • Uses an enzyme to make a polymer- to make copies of DNA

Human Genome Project • The Human Genome Project is an ongoing effort to analyze the human DNA sequence • A working copy was completed in June of 2000
Gene Therapy • In gene therapy, an absent or faulty gene is replaced by a normal, working gene
Gene therapy • A person is given a virus with the gene added that the person needs. • The virus attaches to the host DNA and leaves the gene. • ( We will learn about viruses soon)
Recombinant DNA • Is DNA that is not natural • Pieces of DNA(gene) from one animal is spliced into the DNA from another animal. The resulting animal is said to be transgenic.
Transgenic Organisms • Transgenic organisms contain genes from other species • A gene from one organism is inserted into cells from another organism • Genetic engineering has spurred the growth of biotechnology, which is a new industry that is changing the way we interact with the living world
Andi • Has gene to glow but does not glow?
Ethical Issues in Human Genetics • If human cells can be manipulated to cure disease, should biologists try to engineer taller people or change their eye color, hair texture, sex, blood group, or appearance? • What will happen to the human species if we gain the opportunity to design our bodies or clone human beings?
