Miles Davis • Miles Davis was an American trumpet player who changed the course of jazz improvisation. • Miles lived from May 26, 1926 thru September 28, 1991 • Miles’ mother was a blues piano player and wanted her son to learn the musical arts. His dad provided his son a trumpet.
Miles’ Early Years • Miles began playing professionally by age 16. • He was offered chances to tour nationally but his mother insisted he finish high school first.
After High School • Miles moved to New York to attend The Julliard School of Music. • Miles met his idol Charlie Parker soon after arriving in New York.
Change of Direction • Soon after meeting Parker, Miles dropped out of Julliard. He credits the school with learning music theory that helped him later. • He began playing in night clubs with Parker and others and exploring a new style of jazz called BeBop.
