  22. SOME IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE RECRUITERS • With top Indian technology firms and multinational corporations projected to add upwards of 50,000 people in 2004 and hundreds of medium and small companies calling for new recruits to fuel their expansion plans, freshers never had this good. Apart from domestic big guns like TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Satyam who have announced plans to locate more centres across the country, MNCs like Accenture, IBM, EDS are inducting them in large numbers.

  23. T. Hari, senior vice-president, Human Resources, Satyam Computer Services Ltd., says technology companies like Satyam are recruiting in a big way to meet their expansion plans. Typically, the campus inductions are aimed at next year. Apart from obvious technology skills, companies look for good communication skills. According to Pramode Sadarjoshi, director, HR, Cognizant Technology, which is one of the rapidly expanding tech company, recruitment now for next year helps the youngsters to further specialise in a particular area of interest and be able to match the industry requirements. The company has invited batch of 2002 and 2003 grads to join them since they had tough time due to subdued job market. A wide range of qualifications such as BE, B.Tech, M.Sc, M.Tech and an MCA degree with a consistent high cut-off mark are preferred.

  24. Cognizant recruited over 3,000 professionals in calendar 2003, and plans to recruit 4,000 more in 2004. One difference in Cognizant's additions will be a greater focus on recruiting freshers from premier engineering campuses. Unlike in 2003, where Cognizant recruited over 60 per cent from the open market and less than 40 per cent from the premier engineering campuses, in 2004 Cognizant will recruit over 60 per cent from the campuses and less than 40 per cent from the open market.

  25. Given the general qualifications -- be it engineering degree or related disciplines or M.Sc, M.Tech in particular branch or for that matter an MCA -- the companies are keen that students have excellent communication skills. We are keen on communication skills as this helps match up our requirements," Sanjay Khendry, vice-president, Sierra Atlantic, says. • In other words, companies look for soft skills such as mannerisms, good articulation and presentation skills and the ability to present thoughts in an analytical manner. Assuming that a student is not able to answer a specific query, he must be able to respond to this with a firm answer that he does not know.

  26. "Good skills backed by confident presentation and body language matters for companies and differentiates one from another. As most of the clients are spread across the globe, we expect recruits to be able to articulate in the short time they get with our clients. Those who meet such requirements are better off as training in such basic skills is time-consuming," T. Hari, senior vice-president, Human Resources, Satyam Computer Services Ltd., says.|
