Adverbs are words that modify (describe) verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. • EX: She looked sadly at the broken plate. • EX: He jumped high. V ADV ADV V
Adverbs can answer 3 questions. • How? — She smiled brightly. • When? — He ran yesterday. • Where? — They fell downstairs.
Where, in the sentence, can you find an adverb? • If the adverb is modifying an adjective or an adverb, it is usually found just before the word it modifies. • If the adverb is modifying a verb, it can be found almost anywhere in the sentence. Check out the chart on the next page.
Also…… • Most adverbs are formed by adding –ly to an adjective. For example, the adverb ACTIVELY is formed from the adjective ACTIVE. • What adjective would fondly be made from? • What adjective would quietly be made from? • Most words that end in –ly are adverbs. But not always! After, often, now, and later are all adverbs too. (But they don’t end in –ly.)
