CC.1.MD.3 Time in the Rain Forest There are not a lot of people in the Rain Forest and they do not have many meetings or special things to do, so you might not think TIME is important. But the animals and plants do different things at different times of the day. Most animals sleep at night, just like you. What time do you go to bed? Set that time on the clock. Use an analog clock and a digital one. Discuss the different times the students have set. Use the big clock hands and hour and minute cards from AIMS It’s About Time to show the times. Discuss the hidden numbers. Compare the different times and see how much later or earlier one is than the other.
0 & 1 1-9 1-5 1-9 Make individual digital clocks , shown here, using ½ sheet of construction paper and number cards. All should be laminated. Fasten with zip ties. Giant digital clocks can be made using numbers on full sheets of paper. Each stack can be attached with rings and a dowel rod slid through, so that it can be held and flipped. Cards should be laminated. For a giant analog clock make full size numbers 1-12 on red paper and 5, 10, 15…60 on blue paper. Put strings through so that they can hang around the neck. Use 2 dowels, different lengths, short one red and long one blue. Students stand in a circle with numbers one person in the middle with the hands.

Additional Ideas for Teaching Time Read Tell the Time with Clickety Clock Activity 1 Numbers 1-12 on strings to place around students’ necks…arrange in order in a circle, with 12 at the top and 6 at the bottom of the circle. Student or adult in center with Hour & Minute Hands Student draws a card from the Clock Box and reads it. Person in center points hand to that time. If it’s an adult, ask student to come up and move the hands to the proper location. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Read Pooh’s First Clock Activity 2 Students will have their own analog clock; a group at the front will use the large flip cards to give a time. Students should put that time accurately on their clocks. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Activity 3 Each student will be given a paper digital clock. One person (adult or student) sets an analog clock then and the students should flip the cards on their digital clock to the same time that is set on the analog clock. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
