  2. FUN WITH HYDRAULICS

  3. OBJECTIVE: • To develop the Instructor Pilot’s understanding of the components and functions of the UH-60 Hydraulic System

  4. OVERVIEW • HYDRAULIC SYSTEM DESCRIPTION • MAIN COMPONENTS AND THEIR LOCATION • DESCRIBE THE FUNCTION OF EACH COMPONENT • DISCUSS THE INTERACTION OF EACH COMPONENT WITH THE REST OF THE SYSTEM (LDI SEQUENCING) • REVIEW EMERGENCY PROCEDURES/LIMITATIONS • GO THROUGH SOME HYDRAULIC SYSTEM TRIVIA • SUMMARY • QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (target practice time)

  5. DESCRIPTION: • TWO COMPLETELY REDUNDANT SYSTEMS (1&2) • ONE BACKUP THAT SUPPLIES FULL FLIGHT CONTROL PRESSURE FOR EITHER SYSTEM (1 OR 2) OR BOTH. • Note: If both 1 & 2 HYD stages are out, there is a slight restriction in max rate of flight control movement (6.2 GPM @2900 psi). • SYSTEM PRESSURE (No Load) is 3,050 + 50 psi.

  6. MAJOR COMPONENTS: • 3 HYD PUMP MODULES • 2 TRANSFER MODULES, A PILOT ASSIST, AND A UTILITY MODULE • 3 DUAL PRIMARY SERVOS • 1 DUAL TAIL ROTOR SERVO • 4 PILOT ASSIST SERVOS • AN APU ACCUMULATOR, AN APU HANDPUMP • 1 SERVICING HANDPUMP

  7. COMPONENT FUNCTION: • HYD PUMP MODULES: COMBINED PUMP & RESERVOIR, identical and interchangeable with each other • PILOT ASSIST, TRANSFER & UTILITY MODULES: Integrated assemblies of restrictors, switches, and valves for LDI switching. Utility module routes B/U to 1 or 2 and APU accum. • PRIMARY SERVOS: 2 independent stages , each can react to max aero. loads and are Interchangeable. • TAIL ROTOR SERVO: 2 stage (1 at a time) powered by #1 or B/U pump only

  8. COMPONENT FUNCTION: • 4 PILOT ASSIST SERVOS: To overcome friction, eliminate SAS feedback, and allow FPS input to flight controls. • APU ACCUMULATOR: Supplies 2850 + 150 psi HYD press. for APU starting. An APU hand pump to manually recharge accumulator. • 1 SERVICING HANDPUMP: Allows refilling of any reservoir in the system through a selector valve.

  9. LDI sequencing #1 System:(A Leak Starts) • MC • #1 RES LOW • #1 TAIL RTR SERVO • BACK-UP PUMP ON • #2 TAIL RTR SERVO

  10. LDI sequencing #1 System:(Leak continues) • MC • #1 RES LOW • #1 HYD PUMP • BACK-UP PUMP ON • Pressure on #1 TV feeds #1 PRI servos and #1 TR servo is turned back on. • If no other lights, leak was upstream of #1 transfer module.

  11. LDI sequencing #1 System:(Leak continues) • MC • #1 HYD PUMP • #1 RES LOW • BACK-UP RES LOW • BACK-UP PUMP ON • EMER PROCEDURE ???? • Servo off SW 1st STG • LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE • LIMITATIONS ????

  12. LDI sequencing #1 System:(Resulting Condition) • MC • #1 PRI SERVO PRESS • #1 HYD PUMP • #1 RES LOW • BACK-UP RES LOW • BACK-UP PUMP ON

  13. LDI sequencing #1 System:(Resulting Condition for no pilot action) • MC • #1 PRI SERVO PRESS • #1 HYD PUMP • #1 RES LOW • BACK-UP RES LOW • #1 TAIL RTR SERVO WHAT ALL HAVE WE LOST ???? • WE’VE LOST #1PRI SERVOS, & #1 AND #2 TAIL RTR SERVOS • LIMITATIONS ????

  14. LDI sequencing #2 System:(A leak starts) • MC • #2 RES LOW • BOOST SERVO OFF • SAS OFF • TRIM FAIL • FLT PATH STAB • PROCEDURE ???? • BOOST AND FPS OFF • LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE

  15. LDI sequencing #2 System:(Leak continues) • MC • #2 HYD PUMP • FLT PATH STAB • TRIM FAIL • #2 RES LOW • BACK-UP PUMP ON • PROCEDURE ???? • Do a Power on Reset

  16. LDI sequencing #2 System:(Resulting Condition) • MC • #2 HYD PUMP • #2 RES LOW • BACK-UP PUMP ON • LIMITATIONS ????

  17. LDI sequencing #2 System:(Leak continues) • MC • #2 HYD PUMP • #2 RES LOW • BACK-UP RES LOW • BACK-UP PUMP ON • PROCEDURE ???? • Servo off SW 2nd STG • LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

  18. LDI sequencing #2 System:(Resulting Condition) • MC • #2 HYD PUMP • #2 PRI SERVO PRESS • #2 RES LOW • BACK-UP RES LOW • BACK-UP PUMP ON • LIMITATIONS ????

  19. LDI sequencing #2 System:(Resulting Condition for no pilot action) • MC & #2 HYD PUMP • #2 PRI SERVO PRESS • #2 RES LOW • BACK-UP RES LOW • BOOST SERVO OFF • SAS OFF • FLT PATH STAB • TRIM FAIL • NOADVISORIES

  20. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES#1 HYD PUMP Caution Light On • MC & #1 HYD PUMP • #1 TAIL RTR SERVO • BACK-UP PUMP ON • #2 TAIL RTR SERVO ON • RESULTING CONDITION: • MC & #1 HYD PUMP • BACK-UP PUMP ON

  21. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES#2 HYD PUMP Caution Light On • MC & #2 HYD PUMP • TRIM FAIL • FLT PATH STAB • BACK-UP PUMP ON • RESULTING CONDITION: • Do a Power On Reset • MC & #2 HYD PUMP • BACK-UP PUMP ON

  22. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES#2 PRI SERVO PRESS Caution Light On • MC & #2 PRI SERVO PRESS • A PRIMARY SERVO VALVE IS JAMMED • IF BOTH SERVO OFF SWITCHES ARE CENTERED • LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

  23. EMERGENCY PROCEDURESBOOST SERVO OFF Caution Light On • MC & BOOST SERVO OFF • INDICATES A PILOT VALVE JAM IN EITHER COLLECTIVE OR YAW BOOST SERVO, OR THEY ARE TURNED OFF • BOOST SWITCH OFF • LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE

  24. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES#1 AND #2 HYD PUMP Caution Lights On • MC & #1 and #2 HYD PUMP • TRIM FAIL • FLT PATH STAB • BACK-UP PUMP ON • #2 TAIL RTR SERVO ON • PROCEDURE ???? Power On Reset • LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE • LIMITS ????
