The kingdom of Songhai flourished from the middle 1300’s to the 1500’s—they controlled more land than Ghana and Mali C. Connecting Different Parts of the World 1. People from different parts of the world made connections through trade, exploration, new tools and ideas, and sharing knowledge 2. The Arabs developed the astrolabe to help sailors use the sun and stars to find their latitude

Portugal’s Prince Henry send explorers to map the African shore and find a new sea route to Asia 2. Portugal profited from the slave trade D. A Sea Route to India 1. Dias and da Gama round the tip of Africa and established routes to India 2. These trade routes made Portugal a rich trading empire E. Exploration Continues 1. Europeans begin taking longer ocean voyages 2. Eventually they contact the peoples of the Western Hemisphere
