  1. Forming a Hypothesis Tuesday, Aug. 28th

  2. Purposes: • Content: Develop personal responsibility and make hypotheses based on observations of the natural world. • Language: Use an “if . . . then” sentence frame to create hypotheses. • PWG Outcome: help your group form hypotheses for each inquiry.

  3. First 20 days • Day 7 –Discuss with your partner what makes for good communication between students.

  4. Hypothesis Structure

  5. How to make a hypothesis statement: • Hypothesis statements are ALWAYS written as "If ...Then" statements.

  6. Example of a hypothesis • If I stay out in the sun for 3 hours then I will get a sunburn.

  7. Changing my thoughts into hypotheses • I’m thinking: The higher the temperature of the water, the faster the egg will cook. • I write as a hypothesis: If I raise the temperature of the water then, the egg will cook faster • Or. . . If temperatures of water are raised, then the eggs will cook faster.

  8. Changing my thoughts into hypotheses • I’m thinking: Lemon trees receiving the most water • produce the largest lemons. • I write as a hypothesis: If I increase the amount of water given to lemon trees, the size of the lemons produced will increase.

  12. Determining Dependent and Independent variables Independent Variable - Variable in an experiment that is changed or manipulated. I.V. - The amount of time spent in the sun Dependent Variable - The variable in an experiment that responds to the change and is measured. D.V. - Getting a sunburn

  13. How could we change our hypothesis to provide for a more scientific experiment? • Measure using quantitative data versus qualitative data. Vocabulary: • Quantitative Data: uses numbers and measurements • Qualitative Data: uses 5 senses to observe

  14. Assignment • This week we will be creating an experiment from beginning to end. You will be following the steps of scientific inquiry (the scientific method). • You must think of something you would like to test. • Homework: come up with a question, observe or research something, and come up with a hypothesis statement.
