  2. Let’s begin with defining a paragraph… What is a paragraph people? • A group of sentences that relates one main idea. • Usually part of a longer piece of writing.

  3. Paragraphs Usually Contain: • A Main Idea • A Topic Sentence • Supporting Sentences • A Clincher Sentence

  4. A Main Idea Is: • The topic that the paragraph is about • A paragraph might not have a topic sentence. • A paragraph might not have a clincher sentence. • A paragraph HAS TO HAVE a Main Idea!

  5. Topic Sentence The top of your bun! • Topic Sentence: • States the Main Idea • Can come anywhere in the sentence • Usually at the beginning • (1st sentence)

  6. Tell what the topic sentence is in this paragraph! The first skateboard was probably constructed in the 1930’s. This skateboard was a homemade contraption consisting of a two-by-four & the metal wheels of a roller skate. In 1958, Bill Richards made a deal with the Chicago Roller Skate Co. to produce skateboards, & the method of skateboard was reborn. From garage hobby to national sport, skateboarding has certainly come a long way.

  7. Sometimes, there is no topic sentence! We have to piece together the details to figure out the main idea! Let’s try it! What’s the main idea of this paragraph? When the coyote had finished drinking, it trotted a few paces to above the stepping stones and began to eat something. All at once, it looked up directly at me. For a moment, it stood still. Then it had turned and instantly vanished back into the woods that underlay the trees. From behind the trees, a big, black hawk-like bird with a red head flapped out and away. Up in the lake, the herons took wing. They, too, circled away from me. The author disturbed the animals and they fled.

  8. Supporting Sentences All the juicy details!! SS give specific detail that explain or prove the main idea. You can achieve this by using 3 different things: • Sensory Details • Facts • Examples

  9. Sensory Details! • Words that appeal to 1 or more of your 5 senses!!! • We talked about these with your Phrase Story! • Using sensory details helps create imagery!

  10. Another way to support your main idea! Facts! A fact is a statement that can be proved true. Fact: Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. Opinion: Washington D.C. is the best city in the world.
